AI crawlers against AI referrals
Two things get called AI traffic and they have nothing in common. Here is how to tell them apart and where each one is reported.

They are not the same event
| AI crawler | AI referral | |
|---|---|---|
| What happened | Software fetched your page | A person clicked through to your site |
| Example | GPTBot, ClaudeBot, PerplexityBot, CCBot | A reader arriving from ChatGPT or Perplexity |
| Is it human | No | Yes |
| How it is detected | Server-side collection, since it runs no JavaScript | The referrer, or campaign tags when the referrer is missing |
| Where it is reported | The bots and crawlers screen | The sources screen |
| Does it count toward billing | No | Yes, it is a human pageview |
Why they are never added together
A single "AI traffic" number would mix software that read your article with people who came to read it. Those two facts lead to opposite decisions: one tells you whether models are ingesting your content, the other tells you whether assistants are sending you an audience.
They are not only separate rows in TrueVisit, they are separate screens, so the two can never be summed by accident.
When a referral cannot be proven
Assistants do not always send a referrer. Where campaign tags identify the source of a visit that arrived with no referrer, TrueVisit labels it as suspected rather than counting it silently as confirmed, and says so in the interface.
